Backbenchers Condemn Starmer's Reversal on Workers' Rights as 'Utter Disloyalty'

Keir Starmer is facing backbench anger after ministers abandoned plans to give workers immediate safeguards against unfair dismissal, a change breaking the Labour manifesto.

MPs Voice Concerns

Parliamentarians such as an ex-government official who spearheaded the employment rights bill raised objections about the concession revealed by the administration.

Cabinet members have removed the plan to scrap the 24-month eligibility timeframe for workers to make an unfair dismissal claim and allow them to do so beginning day one in a new job, in an attempt to pass the legislation through parliament.

Government Impasse

The legislation became trapped in a confrontation among upper and lower chambers over the original plan to provide employee safeguards from the start, including proposals to outlaw predatory flexible hour arrangements.

Ministers currently plan to introduce the right over unfair dismissal following half a year employment rather, whereas other immediate protections to fatherhood time off and health-related payments are still due to go ahead, taking effect in the second quarter of 2026.

Resistance and Disapproval

The elected official for the Teesside area described the move as a "complete betrayal" and committed to campaign for its cancellation.

"We must oppose that compromise solution."

"This is a wrong-headed move and I plan to fight to overturn this compromise."

An additional parliamentarian expressed frustration regarding insufficient discussion, observing: "There has been zero consultation with parliamentary colleagues. The Lords don't have primacy regarding election promises, hence what prompted our让步?"

Wider Consequences

Another representative remarked: "Businesses should not worry from day-one rights, but workers have everything to fear from an employer who doesn't want day-one rights."

The former employment minister affirmed that the decision "undoubtedly constitutes a broken promise."

Administration Defense

The education secretary explained remained a "substantial likelihood" the execution of the employment rights bill might have faced postponement had the administration not implemented a change regarding immediate safeguards against wrongful termination.

"Consultation has occurred concerning the matter about unfair dismissal and the qualifying timeframe with employers, labor organizations and the administration, and after those talks understanding has been reached regarding the path ahead, which is welcome."

The minister stressed that "Consequently the time limit will come down from two years to six months, and this accompanies crucial immediate protections concerning illness compensation and about family time off."

"But the risk here was that if we didn't make progress, those significant entitlements could remain inactive beginning second quarter 2026."

When questioned about whether it amounted to a broken promise, the secretary answered: "Throughout the campaign document, what we said was that we intended to collaborate with labor organizations, with business, with community groups, while discussing these safeguards we intended to implement."

"Consequently, dual elements remain concerning that issue, in the election platform, the significant entitlements and the discussion process."
